In theory America has a two party system. Many Americans find it hard to imagine anything else. But a two party system is not what the founders envisioned and in fact they warned against it. John Adams said, “There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and concerting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution“. (Letter to Jonathan Jackson (2 October 1780), “The Works of John Adams”, vol 9, p. 511
In his farewell address George Washington stated, “The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty“. Should Marijuana be legalized, not just individual states but at the Federal level? Short answer – yes. Watch the video below, I’ll wait.
Stricter enforcement under Trump?
In his Febuary 17 press briefing Roby Brock with Talk Business & Politics asked the question: “I have a question on medical marijuana. Our state voters passed a medical marijuana amendment in November. Now we’re in conflict with federal law, as many other states are. The Obama administration kind of chose not to strictly enforce those federal marijuana laws. My question to you is: With Jeff Sessions over at the Department of Justice as AG, what’s going to be the Trump administration’s position on marijuana legalization where it’s in a state-federal conflict like this?”
Citing the opioid addiction crisis Spicer seemed to indicate the Trump administration would prosecute recreational marijuana use. Spicer said, “There is still a federal law that we need to abide by in terms of the medical — when it comes to recreational marijuana and other drugs of that nature”. When pressed on the issue Spicer responded “Well, I think that’s a question for the Department of Justice. I do believe that you’ll see greater enforcement of it”. Remember the quaint old days when then President Clinton tried to get us to believe that truth depended upon what “is” is? In his words, “It depends on what the meaning of the word ‘is’ is. If the–if he–if ‘is’ means is and never has been, that is not–that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement….Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true.”
We have had to deal with a couple of whoppers from the White House since then. President George W. Bush making the claim of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, Barack Obama stated ‘If you like your health care plan, you can keep it’, just two of the most obvious lies. Donald Trump however has taken deception to a new low as shown by Robert Reich’s video below originally posted on his blog.
